Nightclubs as Research Labs; Music, Sex, Alcohol, Natural Selection, Economic Cycles and some odd Statistics…you may just think differently the next time you go out!

Check out this interesting video and perspective on nightclubs as a sociologic research lab. I found the topics quite interesting, for example music related to natural selection, and how alcohol enables inhibition, and the “Rock Star” effect and the release of oxytocin. One thing I did disagree with was the statistic that nightclubs cater more to men – in that there are always more women than men (60% women to 40% men) in a nightclub. I say no way! How many times have we all been out at bars and nightclubs and looked around and then turned to our buddies and said “wow, sausage fest tonight”, or “wow, sure are a load of dudes here…let’s leave!”. Prime example of that is how the Men’s line to the bathroom is almost always longer than the Woman’s line, even though us men supposedly take half the amount of time than girls right. You almost always get that drunk dude next to you in the Men’s’ line going “what’s up with this, a line for the Men’s room?”…no shit buddy, look around it’s a damn sausage fest and there simply are more male bodies in this place then females duh! Do the math dummy! Other interesting points were the relationships drawn between economic cycles and the types of music played at nightclubs, and the growth and emergence of electronic music during this recent 2008 recession. Something of particular note for you Rising DJ’s; it is important to know your audience and be able to “read the room” and play what they want to hear. Another interesting point that may come across as a shocker to some is the statistics that supports the claim that Men are most interested in “looks” when it comes to finding a mate, whereas females are most concerned with “access to resources” ($$$)…just kidding, not really a shocker at all right? Lastly some interesting stats on something called the “Scent Pyramid” as related to the size of perfume and cologne bottles, and another stat called the “Hemline Index”: economic booms = shorter dresses…that being said, let’s get this damn economy moving again full speed ASAP!!!
