Do you enjoy being physically abused by bass, having your eardrums explode and your chest crushed by disgustingly filthy riffs? If you are part of the underground beat junkies, then I suggest you lend an ear to the new rising duo out of Sweden–Qulinez (pronounced “Cool Lines”). Swedish House Mafia sure did, and now they’ve just been signed to Steve Angello’s Size Records.
Swede’s Johannes Gustafson and Alex Lager both grew up in small towns (Laholm and Varberg, respectively), with small families, and both with a fervent dislike for school – except for music class of course, the highlight of their day. Gustafson played various instruments growing up, as well as performed in few punk rock bands back in the day. Lager did not have such a diverse musical background as his counter part; however, he always had an interest in music and he did play the triangle for many years (no joke). And now, they are receiving recognition from some of dance music’s most elite acts.
In a recent interview with MTV News, the two explained how they were contacted and then signed by one of house music’s biggest stars–Steve Angello.
“When Steve [Angello] contacted us by email, I was the first who read it,” Alex recalled. “I tried to call Johannes many times but, like always, he didn’t answer the phone! So I had to drive my car to him and wake him up! Then he opened the door and I was like, ‘WE’VE GOT MAIL FROM STEVE ANGELLO AND HE WANT TO SIGN US!’ So we started to jump around, and the whole apartment was shaking!”
Angello’s Size Records imprint has been one of the most influential and prominent taste-makers in the Electronic Dance Music underground scene for the past two years with a rising talent roster including names such as AN21, Max Vangelli, Third Party, and Tim Mason. It is safe to say that getting a nod from one of house music’s biggest names and most respected labels has these young Swedes in disbelief.
“To have a blessing from Swedish House Mafia is unbelievable and awesome,” Gustafson gushed. “We don’t yet understand what to think!”
The duo just released their epic banger “Troll,” a single that is sure to rise the charts and become a lethal weapon in their musical arsenal. The track is now available on Beatport, you can also follow them on Twitter and keep an eye out for what else this team will release in the near future.
